Opening Night: Now & Then by Chris Cran

Chris Cran, RCA, is a Canadian visual artist living in Calgary, Alberta. He graduated in 1979 from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at the Nickle Art Galleries at the University of Calgary, Glenbow Museum (2019), Mylona Gallery in Zurich, Switzerland (2018) and at the National Gallery of Canada (2016) in a large survey exhibition (1984 - 2016) that combined exhibitions from the Art Gallery of Alberta (2015) and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (2015). He received the ACAD Alumni Award of Excellence in 2011 and the Doug and Lois Mitchell Outstanding Calagary Artist Award in 2014. As well, he was awarded the Royal Canadian Geographical Society's Lawrence J. Burpee Medal in 2018. In 2021, he was awarded an Honorary Master of Fine Art from the Alberta University of the Arts. He is represented by Trépanier Baer Gallery in Calgary, Clint Roenisch Gallery in Toronto and Wilding Cran Gallery in Los Angeles.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Jack lives with his Mother on a fledgling bean farm and fills his day with imaginary tales of fantastic adventures to combat the despair and boredom. However one day, forced to trade their beloved family cow for food, Jack meets a mysterious merchant on the way to market and is whisked away on an epic journey of his own! Jack dangles from a monstrous beanstalk miles from the ground, discovers the vast riches of an enormous castle above the clouds and befriends a most unusual individual: A Giant! But when Jack steals the Giant’s most prized possession, a beautiful singing harp, he’s faced with a difficult choice that tests the extent of his courage. Girl Brain is a collection of observational, situational and sensational humour from the hearts and minds of three fine Albertan ladies! Written, directed and performed by Alyson Dicey, Ellie Heath and Caley Suliak, this troupe has performed for sold out audiences in Edmonton, and across Canada and the United States. WORLD PREMIERE “That’s the goal: happiness.” Beloved painter Agnes Martin enters a theatre. A play is written for her about a meeting with her younger self, a girl aching to go towards something new. Beauty. Truth. Innocence. The voices in her head lead her to paint. Her search for happiness takes Agnes on a journey from Macklin, Saskatchewan to MoMA of New York and the mesas of Taos, New Mexico. Moscovitch’s play asks us to confront how structures of power distort our perceptions of love.
